Stadiums in Washington, DC: Teams, Locations & Visitor Tips
Washington sports can send you in surprisingly different directions. A soccer match puts you beside the Anacostia. College football takes you onto Howard University’s campus. A Washington Commanders ticket currently sends you outside Washington altogether.
That is why stadiums in Washington, DC make more sense when you compare them by the experience they offer, not just by capacity. Here are four football and soccer destinations worth knowing. Three are places where you can currently attend a match or game. The fourth, the RFK campus, explains where Washington’s NFL geography is heading next.
Pick Your Game Day in 20 Seconds
- Best for MLS and NWSL: Audi Field
- Best for HBCU football: Greene Stadium
- Best for NFL: Northwest Stadium
- Best for recreational fields and Washington’s NFL future: RFK Campus
1. Audi Field: Make Soccer the Main Attraction
Buzzard Point | D.C. United + Washington Spirit | 20,000 seats
Audi Field’s Buzzard Point location makes it practical to pair a match with dinner at The Wharf or time around Navy Yard.
The Wharf works well for food before kickoff, while Navy Yard and Nationals Park provide useful reference points for understanding the surrounding area.
Worth Knowing
- Home of D.C. United and Washington Spirit
- Bags no larger than 14 x 14 x 6 inches are permitted
- Standard backpacks are prohibited, subject to the venue’s listed exceptions
- Your entrance can depend on the ticket and event
- Audi Field lists Navy Yard-Ballpark and Waterfront among its Metro access options
Plan the Approach Before Game Day
Metro access does not mean stepping off the train beside the gates. Getting to Audi Field is easier once you check the guidance for your date. The same approach does not apply to every event.
Choose this if: professional soccer is the priority and you want to remain inside Washington.
2. Greene Stadium: See Washington Through Howard Football
Howard University | Howard Bison | Up to 10,000 for football
Greene Stadium offers something the city’s professional grounds cannot duplicate: a game inside Howard University’s campus culture.
The stadium dates to 1926 and hosts Bison football, along with men’s and women’s soccer.
What Makes Greene Stadium Worth Considering
- Howard Bison football
- Howard Homecoming
- College soccer
- HBCU sports culture
- A smaller college setting
Look Beyond the Football Fixture
A Homecoming game and a regular-season home game can create very different experiences across Howard’s campus.
For 2026, Howard’s Homecoming football game against Morehouse is October 17. If Howard culture is part of your reason for visiting, review the wider Homecoming program first. It shapes how much of the day belongs on campus.
Best fit when: you want college football closely connected to Washington’s HBCU history.
3. Northwest Stadium: The Commanders Currently Play in Maryland
Landover, Maryland | Washington Commanders | NFL
The name on your ticket can create a misleading mental map.
The Commanders sit at 1600 Ring Road in Landover, well outside the District. If you’re staying near the National Mall, don’t treat the trip like a downtown sports stop.
Going by Metro?
Metro directs passengers to Morgan Boulevard on the Blue and Silver lines. The stadium is roughly a mile from the station.
That distance deserves consideration if you’re attending with children, older relatives, or someone who may find a longer walk difficult.
Don’t Reuse Audi Field’s Bag Rules
Northwest Stadium follows the NFL clear-bag policy. Permitted clear bags can measure up to 12 x 6 x 12 inches, subject to the stadium’s own rules.
Attending soccer and football during the same Washington visit? Verify the policy for each stadium separately.
Head here if: seeing the Commanders is the main reason for your day.
4. What Is Happening at the RFK Campus?
RFK Campus | Recreational fields today, future NFL stadium
The RFK campus is the most confusing address in Washington sports right now, because three different things share the same name. Sorting them out saves a wasted search.
Recreational fields you can use now
The Fields at RFK Campus provide recreational playing space on land tied to decades of Washington sports history. This is the one entry where you get the field, not a seat. It suits anyone drawn more to playing or exploring the changing area than to a match.
The former RFK Stadium
The old RFK Stadium no longer operates. Structural demolition was completed in May 2026, although site demolition and closeout work is still underway, with completion anticipated in October. Searching only “RFK Stadium” can surface the former building, the recreational fields, the wider redevelopment, or the future stadium all at once.
The next Commanders home
Plans call for an approximately 65,000-seat roofed Commanders stadium on the RFK campus, with opening targeted for 2030. Planning, infrastructure work, and site preparation are underway, but you cannot attend a Commanders game here yet. It still matters when researching Washington football, since search results increasingly mix the present and future homes.
Before You Leave, Do This Five-Minute Scan
These destinations sit in very different parts of the Washington area. Before heading out:
- Match the team to the correct stadium
- Open the stadium’s bag policy
- Confirm the entrance information on your ticket
- Identify the relevant Metro station if using rail
- Note the walking distance from the station
- Save the exact stadium address
- Check what else is happening around the site that day
Most importantly, planning how you’ll get there for game day is easier once you know where your stadium actually sits. Audi Field, Howard University, Landover, and the RFK campus are four distinct destinations.
So, Which Stadium Gets Your Ticket?
The right pick comes down to what you actually want from the day. The draw might be the sport, the setting, or a glimpse of the RFK campus. Either way, the answer shifts around the region each time.
The stadium on your ticket can shape more of the day than the team name itself.
